Sketchbook: Denton Ward, Part 2
Yesterday, we got to see Daniel’s first initial sketch of psychic Denton Ward. While it was pretty darn good, I thought it could be even better.
I really want the Denton that I created, that I envision in my head while I’m writing to be present on the page after Daniel is finished drawing, inking and coloring.
Having said that, now, during the pencil sketches is where we want to hammer out the details.
It’s similar to the first draft of a novel, when you just want the words on the page, no matter how imperfectly.
Like a potter throwing clay on the wheel, you now need to turn that lump of clay, form it between your fingers, into that bowl or vase.
Having said that, I was pretty specific in my feedback to Daniel on that first sketch:
Good morning Daniel!
You done good! Real good!
Here’s my notes on Denton:
- The slacks should be pressed and have a crease in them. These are black dress slacks, so there would be less of an urban baggy feel to them and more of a ‘these cost $200 and worth every penny’ look.
- the shoes are a bit too urban for me, too. These should be loafers, highly polished. More of a classic look than hip urban one, especially with regards to the soles.
- You are right, the tie should be done up, with a tie clasp.
- The shirt should also look ironed or pressed and neat, form fitting to a degree. Like a tailored shirt.
- His jacket is a classic trench coat, so there’s a belt in there somewhere, if it can be seen.
- face, glasses, expression, hair, all PERFECT.
Way to go! We’re on the right track.
Tomorrow, we’ll see how Daniel took those suggestions and look at his next sketch.
