Sketchbook: Denton Ward, Part 3
Well, we’ve all seen Daniel’s original rough sketch of Denton Ward. He did a lot of things right, but I had a few nitpicking details that I wanted him to take care of before signing off on it.
As a reminder, here’s what I had to say about the original rough sketch:
- The slacks should be pressed and have a crease in them. These are black dress slacks, so there would be less of an urban baggy feel to them and more of a ‘these cost $200 and worth every penny’ look.
- the shoes are a bit too urban for me, too. These should be loafers, highly polished. More of a classic look than hip urban one, especially with regards to the soles.
- You are right, the tie should be done up, with a tie clasp.
- The shirt should also look ironed or pressed and neat, form fitting to a degree. Like a tailored shirt.
- His jacket is a classic trench coat, so there’s a belt in there somewhere, if it can be seen.
- face, glasses, expression, hair, all PERFECT.
And as promised, here’s what Daniel came back with:

Wow! Much neater, much cleaner, much more in line with who I believe Denton Ward to be.
His clothes are pressed, his expression dour, and his hand holding what seems to be a cigarette that never goes out.
I still had some issues with the shoes, of all things. The heels looked weird, too funky for something that our uptight psychic would wear. I sent Daniel a photo of some black Bass penny loafers, and I think we’re on the right track.
So - what do you think?
Did Daniel hit it out of the park?
I certainly believe so, but would be interested in your thoughts.
Next up, our favorite punk rock detective.
